Program description - Chiropractic Technicians (CTs) play a critical role that impacts the success of chiropractic practice. Competent CTs demonstrate passion, knowledge, and relationship building skills. At the completion of this intensive modular certification course students will be able to effectively perform the key responsibilities needed for the CT position.
Program Learning Outcomes – At the completion of Chiropractic Technician Program the participant will be able to:
- PLO1 – Define standard business operations and compliance policies associated chiropractic practice
- PLO2 – Demonstrate effective communication skills with doctors, staff and patients.
- PLO3 – Describe basic science principles associated with the practice of chiropractic.
- PLO4 – Summarize the components of clinical operation performed by the CT as associated with the practice of chiropractic.
To complete this course, the participant will watch the videos included in the ten modules and complete a short quiz (T/F and/or Multiple Choice) after each video. You must watch the entire video and answer the quiz questions before moving to the next module.

Patient care is a top priority in chiropractic practices. CTs play a critical role in providing superior patient care and illustrating value to patients. Understanding how the nervous system works and how chiropractic care can impact patients will (a.) demonstrate value to patients and (b.) provide quality care. By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Describe the basic anatomy and function of the nervous system and spine.
- Define subluxation and describe a subluxation's causes and effects.
- Understand the three stressors leading to subluxations.
- Understand the "what" and "why" of adjustments and therapies.

The basic framework behind any patient’s care is their care plan. Each care plan is carefully selected by the DC and is constructed to track progress throughout the patient’s journey. Understanding the key components and cycle of a care plan is a critical CT responsibility. By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Identify the three stages of a care plan and their respective goals.
- Describe the general cycle of patients within the care plan.
- Identify the codes and processes of therapeutic, corrective, and wellness care plans.
- Understand the coding sequence used for examinations in the clinic.
- Comprehend the importance of patient education and how to effectively relay information to patients.

A patient’s first appointment provides a lasting impression that illustrates value and sets precedents for future appointments. Managing this highly involved first day is a core responsibility for all CTs. By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Conduct a thorough history review.
- Measure a patient’s vitals (blood pressure, height & weight, bilateral weight).
- Identify normal ranges for patient vitals.
- Perform a visual posture check.
- Perform a visual range of motion check.
- Assess and chart medical and trauma history, primary patient complaints, and postural/range of motion (ROM) deficiencies.
- Effectively communicate with the DC key elements of initial examination.
- Understand the role of the use of patient information gathered by the CT to the DC in performing a Day 1 examination.

Chiropractic practices take confidentiality and patient privacy seriously. Practices must be fully compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
- Understand the concept of documentation of patient records using electronic health records.
- Identify what constitutes a breach in confidentiality.
- Understand the parameters of what may be communicated and to whom to protect a patient’s confidentiality.
- Describe how the HIPPA regulations relate to the CT’s role.
- Understand the consequences of violating HIPAA regulations.

Therapeutic modalities may be used in chiropractic practices to augment the treatment plan. CTs should have a basic understanding of the uses and applications of physiological therapeutic modalities commonly used in chiropractic practice. By the end of this module, the participant will be able to:
- Explain the basic indications and applications of ultrasound therapy.
- Explain the basic indications and applications of electrical stimulation therapy.
- Explain the basic indications and applications of photobiomodulation (laser, red light, IR) therapy.
- Explain the basic indications and applications of traction/distraction therapy.
- Explain the basic indications and applications of hot/cold therapy.
- Recognize indications and contraindications for commonly used modalities.

Services performed within chiropractic practices are documented using Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes. In addition, general charting guidelines and regulations are required to properly document a patient visit. By the end of this module the participant will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to correctly document patient information in the electronic health record.
- Demonstrate the use of correct CPT codes based on the procedure or modality performed including:
- Timed versus untimed codes
- Attended versus unattended codes
- Understand the SOAP format and the required components of each section.
- Understand the charting and timing of outcome assessments within the chart.

Ensuring and maintaining professional boundaries is paramount for all doctors and staff of a chiropractic practice.
