The Chiropractor's Role in Promoting Health, Guiding Behavior Change, and Addressing Social Determinants of Health
12 Hours

Module One: Spine Pain and Its Impact on the Publics' Health
Michael Schneider, DC, PhD
Joel Stevans, DC, PhD

Spine-related disorders (SRDs) present a significant and multifaceted public health challenge. Within the United States, SRDs account for the greatest portion of healthcare expenditures and contribute to more disability than any other group of conditions. Understanding the societal implications of SRDs requires not only a focus on those individuals experiencing spine pain but also an understanding of the far-reaching impact on families, caregivers, workplaces, healthcare systems, and the government.
Further complicating the situation is the complex interplay of biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors that contribute to the overall burden of SRDs. It is here that disparities in access to effective treatment options and other social determinants of health significantly impact an individual's overall well-being and intersect with other important public health issues such as depression, anxiety, obesity, and the opioid crisis.
Addressing this societal burden requires a comprehensive approach including primary and secondary prevention, access to effective treatments, and support for individuals and families affected by spine pain. Chiropractors are well positioned to play a significant role in addressing the burden of SRDs by providing culturally competent and timely access to effective pain management, exercise prescription, patient education, and fostering interprofessional collaboration with other healthcare providers.

Addressing Patient Health Behavior Through Applied Health Behavior Theory and Motivational Interviewing Techniques

Presenters:
Will Evans, DC, PhD, MCHES, FICC - Hour 1
Thomas R. Ventimiglia, DC, FACC (h)  - Hour 2

It is now well established that the leading causes of preventable death in the United States are modifiable health behaviors. It is important that all health care providers actively encourage and support patients to make behavior changes. Despite the evidence that individuals make healthy choices on a daily basis, the incidence of lifestyle diseases indicates they are not successful.

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion “Effective health communication is critical to health and well-being..., .” Healthy People 2030, the nation’s health agenda for the decade encourages health care professionals to focus on improving health communication so that people can easily understand and act on health information. Health care providers who communicate clearly and use methods like teach-back and shared decision-making can help people make informed health-related decisions. These strategies can help improve outcomes, .

This module will introduce the learner to basic health behavior theories and an evidence-based communication technique, Motivational Interviewing (MI). Combined, they will improve the clinician’s communication skills and contribute to the patient’s health and wellbeing.

Learning objectives:
  1. Participants will become familiar with the non-communicable diseases that impact the patient’s morbidity, mortality and disability and identify the most common behavioral theories that can be applied in clinical and community settings.
